There is always great excitement in the Wine Regions from Cape Town to the longest wine Route on Route 62 during the months of February and March as patrons look forward to taking part in the harvest festival. This is a glorious time of the year for Wine farms to celebrate a bounty harvest of rich ripe grapes going from vine to barrel to bottle in the winelands. Many farm workers work late in the evenings till sunrise before the summer heat starts to burn down and scorch the earth.
Many wineries host an annual Harvest Festival with plenty of wine tastings, gourmet food and grape stomping being a main attraction from adults to little ones. Some put on a superb show with local singers entertaining the crowds. Family fun can be enjoyed by everyone with a special children’s area that includes jumping castles and face painting.
Klein Roosboom Boutique Wine farm was no exception as they celebrated Boogie in the Barrel once again with a limited entry of 300 people only. Your entry ticket of R50 included 6 wine tastings and a keepsake wine glass – the real deal and not just a sniffer glass.
On arrival the lush lawns were filled with picnic blankets and families sitting together watching their little ones jump on jumping castles and play in the children’s area.
Food trucks had hungry people waiting in line to fill their bellies. Delicious cheese and charcuterie platters were available for purchase that included cheese, a section of French loaf, grapes and a selection of cured meats.
Scattered tables were bustling with friends and family using the Public holiday to catch up and indulge in gourmet meals, saving themselves cooking time at home. There was a buzz as wine flowed and the weather was picture perfect.
And with most harvest festivals the highlight of the day is grape stomping where you get a chance to “life back in time” when that was the only quick method way to crush grapes that promised good wine. Many festival goers took opportunity of this moment, as the shoes came off and pants rolled up and gently climbed into a barrel to boogie a while. As the jukebox played people got their feet beat-bopping with sticky stomping in the barrels of fun.
A Victorian bath was also filled with red crushed grapes for families to enjoy. Once you got out there was a hose pipe of borehole water to wash the red juice and seeds, skins from your legs and toes.
This was also the best time to give your feet a “treat” with pure grape oils, skins and juice to rejuvenate and nourish your feet – a free “spa treatment”.
On the way to the tasting room “caves” were occupied with small groups of friends relaxing on cushions and chairs as bottles of wine had been purchased and resting on the tables for easy access to fill their wine glasses.
One of the “caves” is called the “hung gat” meaning hanging hole as 2 hanging rope hammock swing chairs are fastened from the cemented “cave”

And we most certainly did hear some old stories from the man himself “Jan Van Riebeck” as we shared a glass of wine and roared with laughter as the best kept secrets unfolded. There was very little light in the “ou gat”, just like the ol’ days. It was a fantastic day where awesome memories were made.
This is a family owned farm where they invite you to come and experience a wine farm like no other. They are open from 10h00 – 16h30 Tuesdays to Sundays. The wine tasting room can’t accommodate groups of 8 or more on week-ends or public holidays. If you would like to do a wine tasting in one of their “caves” or “gats” pre-booking is required.
